House of Waters is a trio that transcends musical boundaries, merging West-African rhythms, jazz, psychedelic elements, indie rock, classical, and world music into an innovative and captivating sound. The Bubble once described their music as something listeners have longed to hear without even realizing it. At the heart of the group is Max ZT, hailed as the "Jimi Hendrix of the Hammered Dulcimer" (NPR). His journey has taken him from Irish folk traditions to Senegal, where he trained with the renowned Cissoko Griot family, and India, where he studied under santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His groundbreaking playing style has reinvented dulcimer techniques, introducing a fresh, contemporary perspective. Complementing Max is Moto Fukushima, a virtuoso on the six-string bass whose mastery blends jazz improvisation, Western classical music, and South American traditions, adding depth and nuance to their compositions.

Their latest album, On Becoming, released through GroundUp Music, earned a nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 2024 GRAMMY Awards. Featuring drummer Antonio Sanchez throughout, alongside guest appearances from guitarist Mike Stern and vocalist Priya Darshini, the album captures their philosophy of musical fluidity—balancing structured composition with open-ended improvisation. Beyond their recordings, House of Waters has made a lasting impact in film and live performance, scoring an Emmy-winning ESPN documentary and re-scoring century-old French Dadaist-era silent films in partnership with GroundUp Music and Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. Their extensive touring history includes collaborations with legends like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Victor Wooten, Tinariwen, Snarky Puppy, and Karsh Kale. As Onstage Review describes, "House of Waters is a band that is bending the very fabric of the musical universe as we know it," continuously redefining the possibilities of modern instrumental music.
