Carter & Cleveland

Between them, fiddlers Jason Carter and Michael Cleveland have earned an extraordinary 18 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Fiddle Player of the Year Awards—more than half of all the honors presented during the award’s 34-year history. Collectively, they’ve also received 17 GRAMMY nominations and four GRAMMY Awards.

Now, two of bluegrass music’s most acclaimed and influential musicians have joined forces for their first-ever collaborative album, Carter & Cleveland, released March 28, 2025.

The project builds on more than 30 years of friendship and countless collaborations. The pair first met as teenagers—Cleveland was 13, Carter 19—and immediately recognized in each other an exceptional combination of technical skill, musicality, respect for tradition, and unmistakable fiddle fire.

“I remember you came to a Del McCoury Band show and gave me your CD,” Carter recalls. “I went home and listened to it, and I was blown away. I couldn’t believe how good you had gotten. To me at that time, you sounded as good as anybody out there playing.”

Decades later, both musicians have proven that assessment true.

Throughout their careers, they’ve crossed paths at festivals, conferences, and concerts across Indiana, Kentucky, Nashville, and beyond. Whether joining Del McCoury’s band for special performances or Carter sitting in with Cleveland’s acclaimed group, Flamekeeper, the two developed a rare musical chemistry that required little rehearsal.

Cleveland describes their connection simply: “Twin fiddle, it’s like really good vocal harmony. When it’s super tight and together, there’s nothing else like it. It’s like our own brother duet.”

For bluegrass enthusiasts and fiddle fans alike, Carter & Cleveland is every bit the collaboration they’ve been hoping for.
