Formed in Philadelphia in 2023, Mariposas Galácticas has quickly emerged as one of the city's most exciting new bands, blending kumbia, klezmer, and punk into a joyful, high-energy sound that celebrates culture, community, and resistance. Co-founded by lead vocalist and guitarist María Paz Ordoñez and clarinetist/vocalist Ariel Goodman, the eight-piece collective grew from a friendship forged through environmental activism and a shared vision of creating music that honors diverse traditions while bringing people together.
Drawing on Indigenous South American, Jewish, Latin American, and immigrant cultural influences, Mariposas Galácticas weaves the rhythms of kumbia with the soulful melodies of klezmer and the rebellious spirit of punk. Their name and unique spelling of "kumbia" pay tribute to Indigenous Kichwa heritage, while their music reflects a deep respect for the communities and histories from which these traditions emerged.
More than a band, Mariposas Galácticas is a collective built on community, activism, and collaboration. Their performances are vibrant celebrations where audience members dance freely, cultures intersect, and joy becomes a powerful act of connection. From neighborhood gatherings and Porchfest stages to grassroots festivals, the band has earned a reputation for creating unforgettable experiences that are as meaningful as they are energetic.
Mariposas Galácticas transforms every performance into a celebration of identity, culture, and togetherness, proving that music has the power to unite, inspire, and move both heart and feet. Don't miss the chance to experience one of Philadelphia's most unique and uplifting live acts.
