For The Sound of Muscle Shoals, Mike Farris’s first album since 2018’s Silver & Stone, he made the pilgrimage across the O’Neal Bridge and Tennessee River into the heart of Muscle Shoals, Alabama—straight to the legendary Fame Studios. The result is a soul-soaked, genre-spanning tribute to the music and spirit of the region, blending Farris’s life lessons and musical roots with the magic of the Shoals sound.

Recorded with members of the iconic Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and other local legends—Clayton Ivey (keys), Will McFarlane, Kelvin Holly, Wes Sheffield (guitars), Jimbo Hart (bass), and Justin Holder (drums)—the album channels the energy of its forebearers. Produced by Farris and executive produced by Rodney Hall (son of Fame founder Rick Hall), it wraps Muscle Shoals’ signature warmth around Farris’s blue-eyed soul vocals. Rolling Stone Country called his voice “supersized… filled with the electricity of Saturday night and the godly grace of Sunday mornings.”

Themes of reflection and resilience run throughout. “Ease On” revisits Farris’s childhood in Franklin County, TN: “We didn’t have much… but it helped me take stock of where I came from.” “Bird in The Rain” emerged after his return from New York to Tennessee, a move that reconnected him with the soil and spirit of home. “Sunset Road” explores the futility of worry, while “Bright Lights,” the album’s final track, reflects on the unseen struggles of a musician’s life—the solitude, self-doubt, and relentless pursuit of craft.

A GRAMMY, Americana Association, and Dove Music award winner, Farris has released six solo albums since 2001 and was a founding member of 90s rock group The Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies. The Sound of Muscle Shoals is his most personal and powerful work yet.
